Background Kherson, Ukraine
Below I outline in a nutshell what has happened since the great invasion by the Russians in Kherson, a city in southern Ukraine and also the name of the oblast in which the city lies.
- March 2022: Kherson city and oblast as the first major territory occupied by Russia.
- March-Oct 2022: Russian administration introduced, ruble introduced, passports distributed. Many residents flee.
- Sept-Oct 2022: Ukrainian counteroffensive begins.
- Nov. 11, 2022: Russian troops withdraw from Kherson city (right bank Dnipro). Ukraine liberates the city - great joy.
- Nov 2022-present: Left bank (south) of oblast still occupied by Russia. Kherson city shelled daily with artillery, drones and rockets from left bank. Hundreds of civilian deaths, city badly damaged.
- 2023-2025: Destruction of Kakhovka Dam (June 2023) causes massive flooding. Power, water and heating often out. Many residents evacuated.
- Now (Dec 2025): Kherson city Ukrainian, but under constant fire. Left bank still Russian occupied.
About Human Safari
Human Safari refers to a Russian terror campaign in the Ukrainian region of Kherson, in which Russian forces are deploying drones (such as FPV kamikaze drones with explosives) to deliberately hunt and kill civilians. The goal is to sow terror, drive out the population and make the city unlivable - a war crime and crime against humanity, according to UN investigations and human rights organizations. Russian pilots often share videos of attacks on pedestrians, cyclists, ambulances and emergency services via Telegram, reinforcing the term ‘safari’ (hunting). Local residents feel hunted; many use detectors or only leave home at night. Since its inception, hundreds of civilians have been killed or injured, and Kherson's population dropped from ~320,000 to ~60,000-80,000.
This terror escalated in May 2024, peaking since summer 2024. The term ‘human safari’ was first used in an article by journalist Zarina Zabrisky in the Kyiv Post in May 2024. It is a continuation of shelling since the liberation of Kherson city in November 2022, but drones now make it targeted and widespread.
Little attention paid to terror in Kherson
There is (too) little coverage of these war crimes in Kherson. Human Safari is being drowned out by news from other regions. Journalist Zarina Zabrisky currently resides in Kherson and has been reporting on these war crimes since the terror began in Kherson. On various social media channels and media platforms, she calls attention to this harrowing situation and publishes images and interviews about the consequences of these attacks.
In addition, she directed a film on Human Safari in Kherson: Kherson Human Safari.
